Porch life

The Mississippi Queen screening at Frameline34 was a hit. There were about 220 people at the 11 am showing. Great Q&A and the after party was super fun. From the festival, we have received many invitations to send screeners for other festivals.

From Place to Place continues to grow. As we think we are ending production, somthing else amazing happens and we continue to document the story as it unfolds. One of those highlights is coming in September. Mandy and Raif will (and crew) travel to Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington DC in September to continue to inspire foster care reform. And ABC World News with be with us and producing a news story about kids aging-out of foster care highlighting Mandy, Raif and the film.

If you would like to catch us in New York, we are hosting a party at The Bubble Lounge September 27th. Mandy will perform a song written by Shelly Fairchild and Stephony Smith from the album “From Place to Place.”

Speaking of albums, we recently received some fantastic tracks from Wapikiya Records produced for our film.

Editing has begun for From Place to Place and we are shooting for the Sundance deadline. Wish us luck – it’s going to be close.

Porch goes to Capitol Hill

This past week, Paige and Matt took Raif and Mandy to meet with Senators, Representatives and social workers working towards em bettering America’s foster care system. They presented to a Senate Caucus for Foster Youth on Tuesday. There were 20 people around the table who listened to their stories and voice. The audience was large and engaged as well. Listening to the discussion, Senator Landrieu from Louisiana stated that our foster care system in broken and she is ready to radically reform the system. Mandy and Raif’s voices truly penetrated the ears of those who can make change. Meetings with Senator Grassley and Representative McDermott moved the two to believe in our system and the political figures who work within the system. From Place to Place is and will continue to create change in the system and to be a part of that is very humbling for this Porch.

Oxford Film Festival congratulates “Mississippi Queen” for distribution deal with Cinetic Rights Management

Oxford, Miss. – The Oxford Film Festival staff congratulates filmmaker Paige Williams for her documentary Mississippi Queen’s recent deal for digital distribution through Cinetic Rights Management FilmBuff.

Williams recently took part in the “speed-pitch” panel at Oxford Film Festival in February where she had the chance to meet with Cinetic Rights Management representative Steve Beckman.

“The Oxford Film Fest is charming, charismatic and connected. A perfect combo for bringing a small film into major light,” Paige Williams said.
After screening the film in Oxford, Cinematical’s Todd Gilchrist called it

“…a surprisingly intimate and thoughtful portrait of one woman’s efforts to investigate and understand that intolerance, and her attempt to reconcile her lifestyle with loved ones who still haven’t come to terms with the fact that it isn’t merely a “choice.”

“The festival is proud to be able to continue a tradition of providing opportunities for filmmakers to connect with industry professionals such as Cinetic Rights Management,” OFF Executive Director Molly Fergusson said.

Oxford Film Festival is now accepting film submissions from May 1 to September 1, 2010 for the February 10-13, 2011 film festival. The Film Festival is accepting entries in the following categories: animation, documentary feature, documentary short, experimental, narrative feature, and narrative short. The entries may be submitted online using withoutabox.com or with a paper form that is downloadable at oxfordfilmfestival.com. Unsolicited entries will not be accepted. Filmmakers will be notified by or before December 15.

The Oxford Film Festival is a non-profit film festival that is held annually in February at the Oxford, Miss. Malco Studio Cinema. The festival is known for showing insightful documentaries, eclectic features, and will return in its eighth year with its popular “Speed-Pitch” distribution panel which provides filmmakers one-on-one time to pitch to a variety of distribution companies as well as a variety of other workshops and activities for filmmakers and film lovers.

Endorsement from Carol Biddle of Kinship Center in CA for From PLACE TO PLACE

A statement of endorsement from the CEO of Kinship Center in California, Carol Biddle.

“I am impressed and grateful that Porch Productions is giving voice to creating and sustaining connections for foster youth. I believe their film and advocacy can inform practice and policy in powerful ways. From Place to Place is a powerful film to inform the child welfare field, policy makers, the judiciary, and the general public about the lost generations of our youth aging out of foster care with no connection to a permanent loving family or even one responsible older adult. Every year, 30,000 youth become invisible exiting foster care after the State has failed to be an effective guardian. When temporary foster care becomes a forever experience, our children enter the world on their own without the most basic supports that are taken for granted for children with families. No one can watch this film without being stimulated to do something positive to change our dysfunctional ways in child welfare.”

HAS Haiti

Paige has returned from filming the good work of Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Deschappelles, Haiti. Danika Sandoz of Spark Creative and Scott Riviere of Asheville, NC made up a great team with a lot of laughs and interesting experiences. The hospital is very busy right now and there were many people from other countries on campus helping out. There was a great team from msnbc.com that we visited  with. You can go to msnbc.com to see a few selections on the hospital and their new prosthetics lab.

Because of the 50 year history of the hospital in the valley, the work of the hospital produces real, long lasting results for Haitians across the country. From the trip, we will produce a promotioanl video the hospital will use to raise funds, a longer form doc on the hospital and Haitian life and two small form edits on a soccer league  and Haitian voodoo. Needless to say, we had a lot of amazing experiences.

The only question is, when do we get to go back?

Matt spoke to a social work class yesterday at The University of Montana. He presented the short version of the film and participated in a talk back with the class. The great thing about the film is it makes the audience ask the question, “so what do we do to fix foster care?”

In other FPTP news, we are planning trips with some of the characters to go to Seattle, Washington DC and Helena to present their stories and evoke change in the system as a part of the film. Very exciting!

Also, we are now licensing the short version of the film for public use. If your organization would like to use the short version of From Place to Place, email matt@porchproductions.net.
